Visual Artist Callout
Images by Scott Akoz Photography - Showcasing Connor Gribben & his work at Triple Threat 2025
Breaking as an art form has taken inspiration from music, movies, social dances and more. In many ways it represents the peak of what the human body can achieve physically. And it is now a dance form & cultural practice that is celebrated world wide... but we believe Breaking can inspire others - beyond the physical dance.
Following on from our prototype commission in 2025 which highlighted North East artist Connor Gribben - Triple Threat proudly opens this years commission to artists across the North East region.
We are seeking to commission a visual artist to create an installation work that celebrates and is inspired by Breaking culture. The work will be displayed as part of our international Breaking event at Dance City on 31st October and remain on display throughout November 2026. This is an opportunity to create a work of scale in a beloved North-East venue, celebrating Breaking culture through art.
The creative scope of this commission is wide spanning within the visual arts and we welcome applications from all visual arts disciplines (painting, graffiti, photography, sculpture, etc). There are specific locations within the foyer area of Dance City where the finished work will be installed and the commissioned work can be informed by these spaces.
Applications open - 19th August
Application Deadline - 31th August 5pm
Artist fee - £1500
Materials fee - £750
Fee & materials should cover creation, installation & removal of new work. The commissioned artist will solely be responsible for the transportation, installation & removal of the work. The created work must cause no damage to Dance City during installation & removal. And all materials used in the creation must be either non flammable or specifically treat to be non-flammable.
Installation date - 28th October
Installation removal - TBC (no later than 4 weeks post-installation)
The chosen artist is required to teach up to 2 x 1 hour youth workshops informed by the creation of their work at Dance City on Sunday 25th October (DBS required). Triple Threat will provide a member of staff to support with these workshops & the content of these workshops can be developed as part of the commission.
Artist workshop fee - £250
Workshop supplies fee - £300
The awarded artists will also be given a free table as part of this years Hip-Hop Flea Market as part of their commission if they wish to promote & sell merchandise.
Selected applicants will be invited to a short interview on Monday 7th September at Dance City Newcastle. And the awarded artist will be notified before Friday the 11th of September. We are unable to provide feedback on unsuccessful applications.
